That is a very powerful story. Also, that really is an incredible price on apple juice.

No, for the love of anything you worship, don’t remove your amygdala. I’ve written at least two research papers on it and you DO NOT WANT TO REMOVE YOUR AMYGDALA.

I would hope that the dangers of folks doing self brain surgery based on the recommendation of a random tumblr reblog would be low. I hope.

I second this — DO NOT REMOVE THE AMYGDALA http://didyouknowblog.com

Anonymous said: Good Anon here. I love this fandom, and think you guys are awesome. Seeing lots of vitriol spewed from Pyka shippers lately. Thought by now they'd stopped their childish behavior & lack of understanding how fandom works. Read an article yesterday, with comments like "get over it. Pyka is canon.", whining, "I can't find any Pyka fic to read, because it's 90% Myka/HG, and only 10% Pyka" *smirks* Jealous, much, two year old Pyka anons? There is more talent in this fandom than in your little pinkie.

This fandom watches out for its own.

Yeah I find it pretty hard to take Pyka shippers too seriously when they could go to almost* every single other fandom and find things that cater to their heteronormativity. Wow. So rough. Much sad. Very oppression.

* I say almost because I’m pretty sure there is almost no hetfic in SuperWhoLock because boyslash.

10% Pyka sounds like a gross overestimation.

Using only AO3, which is easier to check than others, there are 953 under Myka Bering/Helena “H. G.” Wells (if you take the individual stories of collected one shots like The Vodka Made Me Do It etc there’s an extra 100 or so, I didn’t though) and 46 under Pete Lattimer/Myka Bering. So those two ships have 999 between them, making 4.6% Pyka fics.

I failed Maths, but I think that’s right.

All I get out of this is that there needs to be at least 46 more Bering and Wells fics on AO3…

I lied. There are at least 4 Bering & Wells ones in Pete/Myka for fix-it or Pete feelings or not-fix-it Helena feels. Reduce that to 4.2%.

But then we are seeing the little picture. While Bering and Wells shippers are connoisseurs of fic and fan-made content and as such use Ao3 to probably a much larger extent than the evidently less content-savvy Pyka camp, we would need to include two other major arenas to properly document these numbers.

Now; The sheer mountain of Bering and Wells fic posted only on tumblr, for instance. And then there’s ff.net. And you could conceivably find some on LJ too. Now, since all those three have horrendous search options and well, lacking proper meta data tagging, it’s hard to say for sure just how much we dominate.

Even if we allow for some spark of creation on their part, (and as i think Three pointed out, things that are sometimes seen as Pyka art by their shippers were really created by B&W shippers to show the cool pre-the season that must not be numbered) we must factor in the art created also, not just because of the abundance of comment fic, but you know, pictures tell stories too. At which point I’m hard pressed to see how they could even be responsible for 1% of the fanmade ship content for W13,

Like I said, they have canon, we have the fandom

I feel like I should add this: The Pyka fic on Ao3 with the highest wordcount, image

Yes, you’re reading that right. 17,742.

This means that there are Bering and Wells stories with almost more words singlehandedly than ALL the Pyka stories put together. (Even if you include all (*snicker) the Pyka scenes in the show)

Clearly I need to start reading the daily dot more often. I’m not quite sure what to make of this article (other than to scream THANK YOU JESUS that one of the major examples is a femslash ship) but at the very least I am super glad this sort of publicity is starting to exist.

You know, one of the things that struck me while reading it was how every last one of those examples actually courted the fanbase, and then doubled back on it.

Like, I get it, and the Jane Espenson quote they used was not the one that comes to mind, because she’s actually openly admitted to queerbaiting before.  But you know what?  If your mob starts to get out of control, a little transparency would go a long way.

Like, it’s really NOT a showrunner’s job to be the target of criticism for decisions made because the business of television is afraid to step out of the 1970s.  That SHOULD be why networks have PR people.  and yet, I invariably see the actors and writers and showrunners get the lion’s share of the crap for decisions they’re basically forced to make, because we live in a world of social media and UNPRECEDENTED access to personalities, and the NETWORKS basically send their talent out to the front lines to get slaughtered, with questionable PR prepwork beforehand.

That really doesn’t excuse the truly careless remarks made by some of them, but jesus…that’s not a job I could do.

I’ve written before about how people should be utterly ashamed of themselves for being cruel to actors like Lana Parilla for not “fighting” hard enough to represent certain groups when she (and actors like her) are employees with *very* little power or decision-making agency when it comes to story and ZERO input when it comes to marketing and Web’s point makes me even angrier because yes. Networks like ABC fucking PAY people to deal with their fanbases. It should NOT be the celebs job and yet - as Web points out - thanks to social media it has pretty much become the actor’s job, which not only puts an unfair burden on the actors, it lets the network use them as a scapegoat to continue to ignore a lot of pressure they might otherwise be getting.

just to run away with the point of ‘actors shouldn’t be at the end of your shit stick,’ I remember when Glee was doing that concert tour. basically, Lea Michele and Diana Agron were all for the Faberry ship… they teased fans at the concerts but holding hands and all that shit. then Agron decides to wear one of those confession shirts that said “LIKES GIRLS” and the higher ups pulled her out of the next couple of concerts because she was ‘sick.’

then she ultimately left the fucking show so…

understand that actors do see the ship and the potential, but can’t do a damn thing about it. someone above their pay grade with legal backing is probably threatening them/their agency with repercussions of they support something the higher ups are trying to squash.

not soon enough

Also I have said it before I and I will say it again, this is why it is SO fucking important to support independent Queer media. One of the awesome things about femslash con this year was getting to listen to people like Fawzia Mirza, Nancylee Myatt and Laura Zak who produces hashtagtheseries talk about their work. I mean we take fuckyeahpikacha for granted around here but what she’s doing is really really important if we want to eventually NOT read articles about queerbaiting and instead see our ships written as canon.

So yeah, I want Swan Queen to be canon too, but the only way we’re gonna get that some day is if we get smarter about where to put pressure on the networks and what content creators to support.
